In the early ‘90s, Olympique Marseille were the dominant force in French football. They’d begun the decade on a run of four consecutive Ligue 1 wins and an appearance in the Champions League final. For the last of those four league triumphs, the club wore one of Europe’s all-time great kits.

Arriving in OM’s signature white and sky blue, the shirt was best known for the giant adidas three stripes that reached across one shoulder. Combine that with a team that mixed the youth of Marcel Desailly and Didier Deschamps, the goals of Jean-Pierre Papin and the flair of Chris Waddle, and Marseille were on to a winner.

Olympique de Marseille, also known as OM or simply Marseille, is a French professional football club based in Marseille. Founded in 1899, the club plays in Ligue 1 and have spent most of their history in the top tier of French football.

The club has won ten official league titles (nine times in Ligue 1), ten Coupes de France and three Coupes de la Ligue. In 1993, coach Raymond Goethals led the team to become the first and only French club to win the UEFA Champions League, also the first one with this new naming, defeating Milan 1–0 in the final. In 2010, Marseille won its first Ligue 1 title in 18 years under the management of former club captain Didier Deschamps.

Marseille won French Division 1 in the 92/93 season, and also became the first (and, to date, only) French club to win the European Cup defeating A.C. Milan 1–0. However, it was later revealed that midfielder Jean-Jacques Eydelie had (on behalf of the Marseille board) bribed Valenciennes players Jorge Burruchaga, Christophe Robert and Jacques Glassman to lose the last match of the season, which Marseille needed to win the secure the French title, so that Marseille could win the match without much exertion ahead of the Champions League final. The scandal saw Marseille stripped of their title, relegated to Division 2 and banned from defending the Champions League or competing in the European Super and Intercontinental Cups, although they were allowed to remain European champions.
